So many questions!!!
« on: May 16, 2005, 06:33:33 PM »
Hi there,
My husband and I are moving just north of London sometime toward the end of the year.  His family business is opening a branch there and he will head it up- so he will have a sole proprietor visa (I think that's what it's called) and as I understand it my visa, because we're married, will be an automatic thing.  I really don't know the details regarding the immigration process because the company has lawyers that are addressing it- thank god!!  Anyway, I'm currently a student in New York and want to continue my studies in the UK.  I've heard that it's not easy to transfer credits from a US university to a UK one so it seems that my option then is to attend an American school in London.  I've done cursory research on-line and have found  a few of them.  Is there anyone out there that knows about transferring and/or American universities?  Any info would be much appreciated!!!  Also, it just occurred to me- do I have to also apply for a student visa in order to go to college in the UK?  Thank you so very much for any input!  This is such a great forum- very happy to have found it!
PS- I just have to say-  I love that a spell check is available!

I'm afraid I don't know about transferring credits. Its hard enough t do that between American universities, so I can't imagine it would be easy internationally.

If your husband has a work visa you can enter and study with that. That's what I am doing. Work visas count as time towards permanent residency whereas student visas do not. I asked this question a while ago and the respones I got are here

What I know is limited, and this is for an arts program...

It is my understanding that  1 year is spent in foundation studies as one seeks out their intended course of study, or major. 3 years are then spent studying in the major, rather than the 2 undeclared years in the US, followed by 2 years of study in your major.

Therefore, my University credits from the USA (even liberal arts) are not applicable. My adviser in London said that he feels I am focused enough to skip the foundation year, which my American adviser says is atypical for foreign students.

Therefore, credits are not transferable. I also think it has something to do with the UK's education system being a bit more difficult in secondary schools, with courses at high school level which are more typical of undeclared work in the US.

Please note that this is for art school. Many of my credits from my old traditional university would not have worked at a US art school either. I am 4th year (I found out I hated my old major-to-be), so it is a bit sad. But I am more prepared to live alone overseas now than when I graduated from high school, so everything happens for a reason!  :)

Let's take our wigs off in the shopi aisle and fight it out.
