certified copy of marriage license ok?
« on: May 24, 2005, 08:19:01 PM »
is sending in a certified copy of your marriage license ok for a spouse visa?

im trying to get things done as quickly as possible and my states clerk office said they could only give me a certified copy of the certificate on the day of my wedding and then mail out the original copy (which would take two weeks.

ps, we are getting married in the US.

ok. so i guess no one had an answer to that! haha

i have since learned that a certified copy of a marriage certificate is basically your original marriage certificate.

so! now my question is..

is it ok to send in an ABSTRACT copy of your marriage certificate?  my state is really stupid and i can not find a place that does not ONLY give out abstract copies here.

here are the differences...

this is a certified copy of the original marriage certificate
http://www.co.clark.nv.us/recorder/pdf/Marriage%20Certificate%20W.pdf

and this is an abstract copy
http://www.co.clark.nv.us/recorder/pdf/Marriage%20Abstract%20W.pdf

so, if you applied for a spouse visa after getting married in the US, which one of these does your certificate look like?

please!! im SOOO stressed about this, been trying to figure it out all day. :(

Ours has the info from the first one (including witness signatures, etc.) on a page like the second one, except it's green.   ;)

We didn't want to wait for the registrar of deeds to send us the marriage certificate, so we asked if we could pick it up.  We got married on Saturday, the preacher dropped off the signed marriage license on Monday, and we picked up the marriage certificate (basically just the license with the raised seal and registrar's signature added to it) on Tuesday.

No...but then I don't think my county had any other option.  You apply for the marriage license and are given the green sheet.  You have that green sheet witnessed at the wedding and signed by the officiant.  The officiant takes that green sheet to the registrar of deeds, who signs and seals it.  So it's just that one same sheet throughout the process.

We have a couple of copies, but they are identical to the original.

Now I'm confused!  ???

As long as you've got something with a signature and a raised seal, I would think that'd be okay.

We got married in Vegas and used a certified copy of the marriage certificate.  Order them EARLY  like the same week as the wedding.  Clark County does not have a good turnaround time for sending documents - and don't bother using the website to order copies, send a letter and a check.  The woman at the clerks office said that using the website to order certificate copies hasn't worked in months.  Hope this helps - congrats!!

Yes -- send in the certified copy of your marriage certificate -- the abstract is for "use" if you get married in a church (in England).
The certified copy is the one that you will need for pretty much EVERYTHING.

I'm surprised the website doesn't work (to order)  - I used it in 2001 and it was FAST.   I was told it depends on how fast the person who performed the wedding (minister) FILES it with the county.  I mentioned it when we got married -- and the guy filed it ASAFP.

Good luck! [smiley=clover2.gif]

Right, spouse visa - no problems!  Took an hour.  A lot of worry over nothing and a huge relief to have it done!
