Rubbing alcohol
« on: October 24, 2005, 12:30:00 PM »
I've seen the threads where it's mentioned that you cannot even GET rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol here anymore... still true?
If so, what's the equivalent?
(for sterilization as well as... stain removal, whatnot)

I buy it at the chemists' counter in Boots whenever I need it.  Just bought a bottle of it Saturday, in fact.

I haven't seen it out.  I always have to ask for it at the counter.  It may be different down south, but here they've had it behind the counter.  It's not as big a bottle as you get in the US - the last one I got was only 300mL.

It's known as 'surgical spirit' here, isn't it?

That's strange....I tried about six months ago at Boots and was told they were no longer allowed to sell it? Maybe the lady that told me that was misinformed??   :-\\\\   I will check again.

I am also in Scotland.

Some things are also sold in some Boots stores here, but not in others.  Borax, for example.  I can find it in one shop in Princes' Street, but not in the other Boots in the same road.

Yep, apparently there's a lot of variation in how and what is sold in chemists' shops.

I tried to get peroxide once and had to explain to the chemist what it was for before she handed it over.  ::)
Never tried to get rubbing alcohol!

I dont think surgical spirit is the same thing... make sure you read the label to be certain.
I buy it in chemists as 'isopropanol'... i have to ask for it, and it's expensive!  Like a fiver for 500ml.  :-X
