FLR appointment! Hurrah! One question..
« on: June 09, 2005, 02:34:52 PM »
Can I start applying for jobs now? My appointment is Friday the 17th at 1:30pm. Or should I wait until I get it? I've decided that I'm going to suck it up and pay the £500. I know how I get and I'm going to be stressing out over it, and I'd rather not have another excuse to be grumpy and stressed.

i would first apply for a national insurance number, as i had trouble finding a job without one, you can get a temporary one to start off with. believe is used my birthdate or something.

i had to go in for an interview got asked a bunch of questions and brought in my marriage certificate and passport etc...
good luck with flr:)

The only problem there is that some (maybe most?) JobCentres won't even let you make an appointment for an NIN unless you've been given a job.  Not supposed to be that way, but oh well.   ::)

Start looking now, but probably hold off on the apps until you've gotten your visa.  Nobody would really take you seriously without permission to work anyway.

I went to a place where you apply for a NIN, and she told me I had to first get a job, then apply for the NIN. She told me I get a temp one and it will take about 3 months to get a perminent one.

Like Lola said, some of them tell you that.  But they're wrong.  Dead wrong.  It says on the Inland Revenue and the DWP sites that if you can prove that you've been looking for work, you are entitled to apply for a number.

However, you are not legal to work until you get your FLR, so take care of that first!

I am getting married this Saturday, and I have an in-person appointment for FLR the Tuesday after. I  have already registered with two employment agencies. They are aware of when I will be able to work legally, but at least they have gotten things started and are already sending my CV out to prospective employers.  I am supposed to contact the agencies as soon as I get my FLR stamp.

I think the important thing is to be very clear about when you will be legally able to work, so there are no misunderstandings.
