My wife has a DDS from a US university, and has worked in the US for the last 5 years in private practice (including a boatload of expensive continuing education courses/seminars). We may be moving to the UK this autumn if I am offered the job for which I am interviewing in the UK next week.
She has contacted the General Dental Council (GDC) re qualifying for registration as dentist in the UK. It appears a 3-exam IQE test is required of which Part A is basic medical sciences, and Part B and C are more clinical and hands-on. My wife is terrified of Part A since it has been almost 8 years since she last studied the theoretical subjects, and wants to know if it can be waived in lieu of her work experience and qualification. The GDC also says that we should check with the Royal College of Surgeons and see if the American DDS is deemed equivalent to the MSD degree.
Are there any American-trained dentists who moved to the UK on this board? I would love to hear what waivers are granted and what were some of the hurdles you had to cross to get started.
