It doesn't take long at all...as soon as you get your visa from your work, then all you have to do is send it out (with other paperwork & passport) to the embassy and it takes around 2 weeks at the most.  I think I got mine back in 8 days.  If you have the time to do that then I would instead of trying to get it all done during a layover (which probably would not be enough time).

Congratulations!  Where will you be working?

The thing is...you might not get an appointment during that time...and then you'd be up shites creek!  You're going to have to get the visa papers from your future boss anyway...I'd just send for your entry clearance and not have to worry about it!

Hey, quick question for you?

How exactly did you go about getting that work permit of yours?  What is involved in the process and how do you get a company to go along with it?  You said that you employed a solicitor, how necessary is that and could you recommend a good one?  An help you could provide for me would be much appreciated Thank you much.

We know what Salon, we meant where in the UK? ;)

I would not chance it like that in case of a delay!  Is there somewhere closer to home you can go to get the visa?

To be quite fair, for me it was necessary to get a solicitor. She provided all the legal advice but it is possible to get a work permit without one. I probably would advise against it considering its a work permit and a solicitor would be able to help you with all the required documents, however it is spendy...about 470 pounds to be exact.

I went through Gherson & Co. My solicitor was extremely nice but I found she made things wishy washy and the process took 10 months. But Toni & Guy were extremely busy so the documents were slowly given to her which Im sure had something to do with the long wait.

I had to go to London to do a consultation with her to make sure I was competent for the position and you need to bring your passport and CV. I dont know if this varies with other lawfirms.

I found the documents I had to come up with werent very difficult to obtain. They include your CV, any Diploma or Degree, you must prove youve worked at least 3 years in your profession with a letter from your previous employer stating the details of your position.

Im not sure what Toni & Guy had to provide but it was a lot of information, including a copy of their lease, dimensions of their salon, employees salaries, and submit an advertisement for the position for at least a month in an E.U. certified publication with details of any replies, and they had to provide me a salary of at least 18000 pound a year.

It sounds like a lot of work but Im only 21 and I got it so if I can do it you can. Please do not hesitate to ask me questions but I do highly recommend getting a solicitor to lighten the load.

May I ask what is your current situation?

Sorry about that Stacey, Ill be in Nottingham. The closest consulate is in Chicago and now I will be driving there because my solicitor also advised me against the 12 hour delay....:(

Sorry, off the subject...

Any chance your salon has another job opening for a fellow yank hairdresser?  I don't need a work permit(hubs is a student), but a job would be nice!!!  Also, how did your cosmotology/barber license transfer?  Or does that even enter the picture?

I've only been in a salon 1 1/2 years.... I hope I can get anything :-\\\\
