Cheese rolling!
« on: June 01, 2005, 09:48:18 AM »
Has anyone heard of this before? Or been a spectator? Or even participated?

I'd never heard of it until last night when I was out and bumped into my friend Jason who actually won the first race! He proudly showed us all of his bumps and scrapes.

Jason's the victorious looking guy in the green T-shirt, holding up his cheese. The kicker is, he doesn't even like cheese!

Yep, I've heard of it! Haven't witnessed it myself though and would probably worry more about the state of the cheese than that of the men! Love cheese!!

In a village near where we used to live in south Devon they did some sort of race where you had to carry large flaming barrels over your head.

When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

I'm not sure about that, Caryn! I was told that at this year's race, 3 people had fractures, and 23 others were taken to hospital!

OK. I might have to take back my previous comment about this looking like fun. It DID look like fun until I read an in-dept account of the whole event in True Brits by JR Daeschner. I had no idea the hill was as steep as they describe! I had an image of a nice little jog down a gentle slope chasing cheese. Silly me! This seems to be a full contact sport! Still, would love to watch LOL.

It's totally full contact!! Hence all the injuries! Yeah, I'd never participate ... even if the prize is a giant wheel of cheese.  ;)
