I came in originally on a student visa (though like Balmerhon it was before you actually had to get them in advance and so mine was issued in immigration) and I did NOT have a return ticket. I had figured since I was now basing myself in the UK I could start buying roundtrips originating here....
edited to say that I agree with bringing a letter from your school for sure!
