Typing the £ symbol on American keyboards

There are a lot of configuration options between different machines, different character sets, and so on.

You might like to try Alt 156.

It must just be my work computer.  I'll have to try it again when I get home.  There are probably a bunch of £ all over the screen of the server in the basement somewhere.  It's so annoying, they've blocked all of the cool things.   

If it's any consolation, a lot of places here have problems with the character sets.

You'd be amazed how many documents I see from government departments with  the £ sign printed as a graphic or an obscure foreign accented character.     

None of those combinations work for me - I'm on a Sony Vaio laptop. Oh well. The other option is to stick a shortcut for the character map on your desk top, then it's just opening that and copying the £ sign - about 3 keystrokes, not counting any minimizing/maximising of windows. It's a drag, but the only solution that I've come up with....

Besides the ALT 0163, you could also go to the character map if that doesn't work.  Put the character map on your desktop for easy access. But to use it the first time:

--Click on the start button
--Click on "all programs"
--Click on "accesories"
--Click on "Charachter map". (If it's not directly under "accessories", then click on "System Tools" and then click on "character map")
--Double click on the £ pound sign
--Click on "copy"
--Go to your email or text where you want to use the symbol. Hit CNTRL-V (or right click with your mouse and click on 'paste')

What a colassal pain in the butt.
