Guildford or Newbury?
« on: June 07, 2005, 04:49:54 AM »
After a telephone interview a month ago, I have been invited for a face-to-face meeting at my employer's Guildford office (I am not changing employers, just location from Seattle to Guildford) next week.

If all goes well and I am offered a job, I will likely be allowed to choose between Guildford or Newbury as my work location. What are the views here on either of these places? I only know Guildford is south of London near Gatwick, while Newbury is west near Reading. Which one offers a better quality of life (which to me means relatively open spaces, good infrastructure, and a good 400meter running track!).

Besides this, what should I be asking my hosts in general about life in these 2 areas? Transport system and access to trains is important, and so is a safe and crime-free area (although I would not explicitly ask this lest the person I ask lives in the area!). What else?

Thanks.

Have you tried looking at upmystreet.com for info on Guildford and Newbury?
Good luck!

I would also ask about shopping, council tax, what sorts of housing is available...

She does, but she knows nothing about Council tax except that it is high, and house prices are high too.  I don't know Newbury at all so I'm not sure I could say.

Plenty of shopping here in Guildford though, PLENTY!
