Where can I find healthy food outside?
« on: August 05, 2005, 08:00:11 AM »
I just started working. There is a cafeteria here, which serves fatty hot meals (the vegetarian option is usually something like meatless lasagne), sandwiches soaked in mayonnaise, and jacket potatoes. There are a couple of sandwich shops in the area, which also serve mayo-soaked sandwiches and jacket potatoes. There used to be a Pret a Manger, but it closed. The only other options for eating out, as far as I know, are cornish pasties or Burger King/McDonalds.

When I used to work in the States, I used to bring my own food and heat it up in the microwave at work, but there are no microwaves for employee use here.

So how can  I manage to keep a full-time job and have healthy non-fattening lunches?

Both Boots and Marks and Spensers have a large range of healthy sandwiches and salads.  Barring that, I guess you could make your own, or ask at the sandwich shop if they could make you a sandwich with no mayo or butter.

I'll second Boots.  Their Shapers line is excellent (especially the chicken caesar salad -- I have it every. single. day.  ;)).

Can you get fruit with the boots deal?  I know there is chocolate or crisps, but why have a healthy sandwich then really ;D

I tended to make my own meals and bring them.  Usually a big salad with salad or prawns.  The salad bars at the Uni had nothing without mayo in it!  Hello, where is the lettuce, and all the healthy stuff?

I always get yogurt (they have greek yogurt w/ fruit topping and regular yogurts), roasted cashews, pineapple chunks or apple slices (to dip in yogurt) as my "side item".  They also have carrot sticks and baby cucumbers with some sort of dill dip.  There's also a line of Shapers crisps and biscuits, but I suspect they're just as bad as the regular ones, so I stay away from those!

Cool, next time I am there I will look into that option.  Thank you!

I really don't know what I'd do without Boots!  It's a decent lunch for less than £3 -- can't beat that!  ;)

Is there a fridge at your work? can you keep some essential supplies like butter/margerine, cheese. salad etc? This is what I used to do and then buy a couple of fresh crusty rolls on my way to work and make up my own sandwiches.  If you want something hot and there is an electric kettle at your work there are cup a soups & noodles (the healthy kind, not pot noodle!).

If there is a fridge where you work, you'd amazed at the variety of salads you can make. I'm not talking about just lettuce/leafy type salads, but all sorts of interesting concoctions made with grains like couscous, bulgur, barley, or leftover roast potatoes, into which you could toss bits of leftover veg from last night's dinner. DH and I make some sort of nice salad nearly every day using leftovers from the night before. It's worth a try!

I definitely agree with Boots. They have a great "Shapers" range and the food is pretty good... during the school year I would stop in there every day on the way to class and pick up a healthy lunch... usually their pasta salad, bag of carrot crunchies, a fruit salad, and water... managed to stay slim all year!
Plans on hold 'cuz Brexit

No fridge but Boots is a good idea.  :)
