London to Edinburgh by train
« on: July 25, 2005, 03:28:22 PM »
Just wondering if anyone had some 'inside' info, as I can't seem to find a ticket for under £67; 'off-peak' or not.  I've tried GNER, National Rail Services, and Virgin trains... they won't tell you WHEN specifically off peak is, they just say it's 'not available.'
 ::)

I really didn't want to pay £67, but, I really do want to take the train up (I'll probably be flying back, which seems to be cheaper!)

If it's during the Festival & Fringe all the railways are likely to have hiked their fares and done away w/'off-peak' for the month, as the Festival/Fringe is considered a 'peak' season by railways seeking to make max profit.  Hence the 'not available'.

If it's not during the Festival/Fringe, I'd phone them up and speak to a live person to determine when off peak is.

Given the timing of your trip, I'm not sure if you'll find anything cheaper using www.qjump.co.uk, but that's where I've found the lowest train fares.

Thanks though.

It's worth phoning them, but it would come as no surprise that they're not offering 'off peak' fares during that time as it's when they stand to make the most profit.

Thanks... checking it now.  Any idea what the difference is between that and trainline.com?  The 'design' looks the same.  Fingers crossed anyhoo!

No idea. I've never used trainline.com. Good luck to you!

Same.  £67.  Ah well.  I'll enjoy it anyway.  :)
And perhaps, if I'm lucky, it will MORE than pay for itself in a short time  ;)

It's not a bad ride if the weather is clear.  It's long-sleeves or light jumper, trousers and jacket weather here today, so do look at the forecast before packing for your trip.

Thanks, will do!
I'm actually not going up until 13 Aug.; but definitely a forecast check prior to packing!

Given that qjump is powered by trainline I'd guess they're just different portals to the same database of train prices and times.

We're looking to do the London to Edinburgh trip as well as we'll be visiting DW's dad and going to the Fringe on August 20 weekend.  I'm only seeing Weekender fares for £195 (for the 2 of us I assume).

The cheapest flight I can find is Luton to Glasgow for £147 and to Edinburgh for £179 on Easyjet.

The only other option is to fly out of Stanstead to Glasgow on Ryanair for £80 but Stanstead is a long way and Glasgow isn't as close as Edinburgh either so it's a really slog and at a very early time on Friday morning.

I guess there's not much that can be done for cheap fares in the middle of the Summer while the Fringe Fest is going on!

I finally booked a ticket on Virgin, going up on Sat. 13  August for £55.  God help me figuring out how to get back on a weekday morning.

Don't go on the 20th Matt!  Go on the 15th and see me perform!!
