Chances of finding a job?
« on: August 09, 2005, 05:21:13 PM »
As a US resident in Sweden (my husband is a swedish citizen), what are my chances of finding work in the UK?  Will a deciding factor against me be the fact I live abroad?

Are you a Swedish citizen as well?  I don't really know how it works if you are married to an EU/EEA national but are coming to another EU nation which is not your spouse's home country.  I think you might need something called an EU/EEA family permit if you're not a Swedish citizen as well, but ask on the visa board and someone will probably know.

I am not a swedish citizen but I have thought about getting it.  Right now I have permanent residence.  I am just not sure how to do this.  I really need a job.  My husband currently is employed  here in Sweden but I am not.  I think he'd be my sponsor correct?  He doesnt have a job lined up in the UK either although he is great friends with a man in London that owns his own IT company so I am sure he could find something.  The problem is I dont know about me.  I am afraid they would want to interview me and since I live here, it would be extremely difficult.  BUT then I cant move to the UK without work lined up either.....

Hej Green Lady,

Definitely apply for your Swedish citizenship. The wait is very short now. Even if you plan to leave Sweden it is REALLY helpful to have if you plan to move to another EU country. You've been in Sweden for 5 years, right? You could easily get citizenship and that way your move to the UK would be a lot easier. No worrries about spousal visas, or the legalities of working... you'd be an EU citizen so it wouldn't matter.
I'm an American (with dual citizenship) living in Stockholm, Sweden for almost 6 years.

My Swede and I are looking towards a future move to the UK.

Yes, that is what I have...EU/EEA family permit. I am able to work and receive NHS care etc

It may be cheaper for The Green Lady to get her Swedish citizenship.  Then, she won't have to worry if they decide to go back to Sweden or decide to go elsewhere in Europe.

[/quoteI agree...if I were you Greenlady I would definitely get your citizenship in an EU country.  It doesn't mean having to give up your US citizenship and would open up many doors for you.

Well I know all that...LOL I guess what I meant to say is, if I applied for a job in the UK for example and they look at my CV and see this lady lives in Sweden (why should we hire her?) sort of thing...etc.  I dont want them to be turned off by the fact I live in Sweden interview wise if I make it that far.  I dont want my living here to be a factor against me.  Sorry if I didnt make that clear before.  I am not good at explaining myself!  ;)
I dont want it to look bad but I cant move to the UK first and then look for work.  I think the work must come first because I hardly have enough to support myself and that just wont work if I move first...

you could try saying you'd be willing to fly over for interviews.  that may help.

but it's pretty important to have your visa or citizenship sorted out BEFORE start trying to find work here.   deffo before you're made an offer, b/c what if you are and then you don't have the proper paperwork to work here?  the Home Office does things in its own time, and your job status isn't something that would make them go any faster.  of course, if you had the citizenship then you wouldn't need to bother w/visas at all.

Green Lady,

I'll be in the same boat as you when it comes to job interviews. I will be applying from Sweden but expect to go to the UK for interviews. Hopefully I can get them lined up for the same or next day so I won't have to come over several times. On the other hand we might just move when my fiance gets a job (also in IT) and then I'll hit the ground running and start looking once we arrive.

EIS, so true!  I have definitely thought about that.  I wont do anything until after/if I get that permit.  I am not sure I want swedish citizenship yet.  If my husband and I dont end up going the US route, then I will more than likely petition for it.  I am afraid I have quite a bit of debt in Sweden, mostly due to unemployment so that may work against me when I apply for citizenship.  If I get denied then I suppose I will do the permit.  There's so much to take into consideration!  I sometimes wish I could just pack a bag and leave!  It's going to be darn hard to do interviews from here.  We live on one income....
