Cuts of Meat
« on: August 01, 2005, 06:41:58 PM »
I apologize if this has been discussed previously, if so just delete.  :)

I would like to know what are the different names for the different cuts of meat between the UK and the US.  For example - is prime rib called prime rib?  Is a New York Strip called that?

When going shopping and trying to find the cuts you are familliar with, what do you ask for in a UK butcher or grocer?

Thanks much!!

I find exactly the same problem here in the US. I get very confused when shopping for meat as I do not recognize any of the cuts here!!

Vnicepeeps posted pictures of meat cuts a while ago.  I've searched for them, but can't find them.  You may want to ask her (or PM her) if she remembers and can find the post.

I've been searching for that too, Cait!

I also googled it, but couldn't find a good picture.  Have you tried the UK-Yankee website?

Wow, thats super helpful!  TY!  I didn't know a Swede was a Rutabega...  *lol*

For more meat info, this may also help:  http://www.shaneland.co.uk/ebooks/bookbin/a-guide-to-shopping-in-the-UK.pdf
It lists different cuts of beef, pork, poultry, etc. in a .PDF form.

Here we go!

http://www.uk-yankee.com/tools/foods.php

One minor comment on the conversions...

It says Mince "meats" = ground meat. It's actually minced, not mince. The extra d is important when you're talking about mincemeat, which is not meat at all (well, it contains suet so it's not vegetarian, but you know what I mean!) but rather is a mix of dried fruit and peel which is put in mince pies at Christmas time.

I can picture the look on everyone's face when they taste your spaghetti bolognese made with mincemeat  :o

And now, having succeeded in confusing all and sundry, I shall bow out gracefully  :D
