meningitis vaccine for uni freshman...covered by NHS?
« on: August 05, 2005, 08:37:58 PM »
Does anyone know if the NHS covers the meningitis vaccine for incoming college freshmen that will be living in a dorm? My 18 year-old will be here in a few weeks and is going to uni here in Newcastle. He has his NHS number already, but is in the US working for the summer and is under his dad's insurance there. When my oldest son went off to university a few years ago he had the vaccine...just wondering if Nick should go to the dr. to have it or wait until he comes here. It is covered under his US plan...so of course I will have him make an appt. there if NHS doesn't cover it here...sorry if so convoluted!

I think it's only free for children.   You should be able to find out for sure  from your GP or NHS Direct.

My husband got the Men C vaccine on the NHS when he was 24.  It's offered to young males from 18-25.

Phone your GP surgery.

Check with the college, too. When i started at Reading the offered it at a big health screening day early in the term. I declined it but only because I knew nothing about it.
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

It was free for me when I was there as a student, before I had my NHS card or number.  They tend not to even know what to charge if they are meant to be charging anyways, so I doubt he has to worry about getting one.  They like to give them out.

Students, and men from 18-24, are seen as particularly high risk for it.  So it's worth a phone to your surgery b/c it probably won't be an issue for him to have it - let them know he's starting as a fresher.

He can also visit the health centre attached to the uni and they'd probably more than willing to give it to him.
