Am I eligible for NHS care?
« on: September 09, 2005, 10:24:16 PM »
I am here on a writing fellowship for only four months. Since it is such a short time, I do not have a visa or anything of that sort. What do I do if I am sick? I am not sure if my US insurance is valid over here, and am very confused on how to handle this. Also, I am most concerned about how to get prescriptions...I will need to switch my birth control Rx over here by next weekend, and am worried I'll have to pay full price. Which I can't even imagine what that is...can someone help?

If you are here as a visitor then no you aren't eligible for NHS, NHS is only for people with visas that are for settlement here. As for your US medical insurance, you would have to call them and see if they cover you overseas, you will have to pay full price for your birth control, and if your insurance does cover you while you are here then they will reimburse you. I highly doubt any pharmacys or doctors accept any US medical insurances

if you're calling your us insurance anyways... ask if they have a mail order RX service.  mine did, and for the first 6 months of my stay here I purcahsed the drugs and had them sent over here.  not cheap but less hassle then seeing a doctor here, etc...
If you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.
