I can't read
« on: July 23, 2005, 02:09:34 PM »
Well, obviously I can read, but I'm finding it impossible to read books at the moment.  I have a book I need to read and others that I want to read and it's like I can't make my brain work.  Has anyone else ever felt this way?

I can't read, but it's for a different reason.  I had a night light hooked on my window sill and I would read in bed before I went to sleep.  Well, my ever-clever 2 year old got hold of the light, turned it on and burnt up my pillow.  Now I have no pillow and no reading light.

That's ok, cos as soon as I finish painting his brother's room, that wee little man is sharing with big bro and I'm buying a new reading light.

Sometimes I feel like I don't have the concentration ability needed for a full-length book, particularly something serious. It doesn't happen often, but it has on occasion. I'd recommend something like short stories. Or something funny, perhaps? David Sedaris usually does the trick!

Is David Sedaris good?  I saw him on that Jeremy Vine thing and wanted to try one of his books, but then I used my Amazon vouchers on the children and forgot about it.  Maybe I'll do that. :)

I love Davis Sedaris on the radio but sometimes his written stuff leaves me a bit cold. He is brilliant though!

I feel like this all the time Mindy!  I have to force myself sometimes.  But I love it, so I get upset when I feel I can't.

I feel exactly the same right now Mindy and it almost always happens when other deeper things are on my mind and I can't concentrate/relax enough to give myself over to the book ~ even though I am trying to "get away" through the book.

Is there anything mulling over in your subconscious? I did read something where you are concerned about your daughters flying alone soon, maybe that is just niggling away at you? or something else altogether.

I read {i]Naked[/i] a long time ago and really liked it. But that's all I've read by Sedaris.

I usually find myself unable to get into books if I've got a lot on my mind. It passes so I usually don't try to push it. Veg out in front of the boob tube for a while and you'll be thankful to get back to print!

I'm out of the loop now as well.  I went into Oxfam books on Friday just to see if anything grabbed me.  Nope.  Seeing a large display of Sophie Kinsella Shopaholic books when I walked in the door put me right off as well.

*Sigh*.

I'm going to trawl thru my Oprah mags to get the word up on some good reads and see if anything grabs me.
