Best Gyms/Health Clubs in London?
« on: August 06, 2005, 12:30:33 AM »
Can someone give me a list of good reasonable gyms or health clubs in the central London area?  I am a workout freak and I will have to join a gym right away.  Thanks.

well you said reasonable, which really takes a lot away! lol.

the gyms here are NOT like US ones, i've been to some of the 'nicest' in london and they don't hold a candle to the ones i've belonged to in the states as far as facilities and cleanliness.

Holmes place are OK

We have a leisure center near us associated with our council.  it has a pool, work out room etc and only costs us about 2 quid a use...that is...as soon as we try it.  ;)

it's something to look into, but holmes place was OK but i couldn't see paying 85 pounds a month.  a bit much.

Unless you've got a spare £100 (and a couple hundred more for initiation fees) or so a month, buy a good pair of trainers and some workout DVDs to play on your laptop before coming here.

Kiss concepts like 24 Hour Fitness and 'Three months free, no initiation fee if you join by . . . ' goodbye.

Yup - I'm a member of Esporta...it's a lovely gym but it's fricken expensive...over £75/mo.  I'm hoping that the new Swiss Cottage center will be okay and less expensive and open to non-residents!

Alicia, (and in all seriousness), how do you like that (karmaa) gym?  I've been considering going there for some kickboxing classes.  Which classes do you take/like/dislike?

I like the atmosphere but I've only been able to go on Sat because they only do afternoon kiddy kickboxing club on Sat....so I've been able to do the pilates....when classes resume for jess I can do the weekdays beginners' kick course and I've heard good things about Boxercise...

*although I love my husband he is sh*te about babysitting so I can go to gym during the weekdays...so I'm stuck for places that offer child activities while I work out..:P

When I did boxing/kickboxing in LA, I was in the BEST shape of my life... and I loved doing it!  So I've been thinking that's maybe what I need to get back into and stay motivated...
And since Lillywhites was having a fabulous sale (ALL STOCK MUST GO - HELLO!) - I bought myself of sparring mits :) so I'd like to actually use them!
