Hmmm - maybe you're right balmerhon, and it's a tube thing? I'm never in London without extensive tube-riding, so perhaps that's the culprit. :)

Well, that's what I was told. Coincidentally by another Yank over here. I'll have to see if I can find out who told her this. I find I get a tad bit congested after a visit to any city, but London is the only one that leaves a colored imprint!  :P
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

maybe it is worse in some parts of town, I live in north london, zone 2 and use the piccadilly line nearly every day but don't generally have black snot ... or maybe it is from walking around near lots of exhaust fumes? or maybe some tube lines are worse than others? maybe we should do a survey!

god i can't believe we're having a serious discussion about snot!!

I used to get this when living in Poland... no tubes there but tons of coal burning going on.... I still get it if I go to NYC or any major city.... but not as bad as before.  I think Europe as a whole was much worse in the 70's when they still used Regular leaded fuels..

I have bad allergies so those smoggy things tend to get to me...you know the yellow haze that surrounds the cities in the summer?  I get it even in the ATL at times if the air quality is bad.  Still not as much as in Europe!

i, too, have been a victim of BSS (Black Snot Syndrome).  I have terrible allergies anyway, and it was just a nightmare in London.   I did ride the tube everyday and figured that my sinus cavity must look similar to the railway passages...

Since my husband and I have moved to the US I have not suffered it anymore and my allergies are better.  One side effect that I did not notice was so kindly and English-ly pointed out to me by my husband (who I met in London):

"Errr....dear, you really don't snore like you used to!"
had a bit of a wobble.
