Question about computers and laptops
« on: October 01, 2005, 04:44:22 AM »
I'm sure this has been addressed somewhere, but I'm a newbie!  Since there is a difference in electrical service between the UK and the US, what kind of challenges do you have with computers?  Can you bring your computer/software/laptop from the US and have it work OK?  I'm thinking, for example, if I have all my banking stuff in Quicken on my PC, would I have to start over from scratch in the UK?  As you can tell, I'm technologically-challenged, so please remember that when answering this.  Thanks!

P.S. Oh yes, and here's another electronic-type question. I know US DVDs won't work in players in the UK and vice versa, how about CDs?

You can always remove your hard drive with all your software and documents, ship the hard drive only,  then purchase a new computer in the UK and reinstall the old hard drive in that one.

my husband bought a new Sony Vaio laptop last year while we were over in OK on a visit....and he took the US plug out and put a plug from a electrical item from the UK and that is what he uses to charge the laptop with.......So I would think you could find one of these plugs anywhere and us it in your laptop........the currency hasn't affected it what so ever...now this does get plugged into another lead with a black box attached..

US DVD's do work over here if either you have a DVD player that is multi region or you have the unlock code for your DVD player.....my DH unlocked ours and it plays all region DVD's..our DVD player is a Samsung. I am sure there is also a way to plug your DVD player into the TV so that the format of NTSC works here as well.....

yes CD's from the US work here......

Laptops work fine -- you just need an adaptor so the plug fits it the wall.  They're available at many DIY shops and electronics stores for about £5.  American CDs play fine in the UK.
