Shipping your PC to UK
« on: August 27, 2005, 01:55:47 AM »
I have a dell PC I bought here in the US with a flat screen. How much it costs to ship it from here to the UK? I hope it is compatible in the UK with the power difference. Thanks

Are you talking about shipping just the computer system, or will it be added to a general shipment?    If the latter, then the extra cost will be much less than it would cost to ship the computer just by itself.

With regard to power, most PC power units are selectable for 120 or 240V input.  Many of the latest monitors, including LCD and plasma displays are also designed to operate on either, although there are some exceptions (check the label on the rear).     Power units for printers and other peripherals are often single-voltage only though.

Considering how PC prices are dropping these days (granted, they're more expensive in the UK), you'd probably be better off just shipping the monitor and buying a new unit here. You run a high risk of damage during shipping, but the flat-screen monitor would be worth bringing here.

Damage in shipping is limited if you remove the hard drive and CD/DVD drives and carry them in your hand luggage.  :)
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. I shipped my PC from the US to the UK, it's also a Dell with a 17" flat screen monitor.  My monitor was fine for 240V, so yours probably is too.  I just went to the PC World here and got a cable that plugs into my monitor but has the UK plug, and everything works fine.  I also saw the cables at B&Q (UK equivalent to Home Depot).
The hard drive also switched over fine, just had to toggle the little red switch in the back of the hard drive right where the cable plugs in from 110 to 240 V.  My HP printer was also 240 compatible, but unfortunately my speakers were not.

I was moved here on business, so the company just packed up my whole apartment, computer and all.

Hmmm, not a computer expert at all, but I have BT wireless broadband here, so I signed up for BT broadband, bought the wireless package off the BT website, and they sent me everything I needed to get set up for the internet.  Hope that sort of answers your question?   :-\\\\

Is the phone modem compatible in the UK or do I have to buy a UK phone modem?

Modern dial-up modems use the same standards, so unless you're still using an old Bell 300 baud modem (very unlikely!  ;) ) it will work fine with a suitable plug adapter for the British phone outlets.

If we're talking about ADSL, then things get a little more complicated.

Not really.  If you setup an ADSL the microfilters take RJ-45 wires from the PC and the filter end that plugs into the BT socket is British standard.

In regards to shipping a PC, you could ship on a boat via the US postal service.  On their website they show international package rates to the UK based on weight.  So it depends on how big and heavy your PC is.  For example, if it weighed 20 pounds, then surface mail would be $49.75.
FedEx, UPS or some other courier service could be $150-200 or more depending on how quickly you need it, weight, etc.

We packed our desktop in a large hard plastic suitcase, padded with our pillows and our clothes.  We took the 17" flat screen apart (removing the base) put it in a box with some other stuff and took it on as carry on.

BUT please remember to SWITCH the power converter on the back when plugging it in!!!  My partner forgot to (or assumed I had) and pluged it in and POOOF went our computer.
:(
