Can we live on 40,000 pounds? Also what visa?

Hello,

my soon to be fiance got a job offer in London at 40,000 pounds.  I would be joining him.(not sure how, any ideas would help w/visas etc) but without me able to work, I was wondering if it would be very difficult to live.  We are mostly looking for something near transportation in zone 2 or 3.  Studio or 1 bed, nothing fancy b/c we want to travel and go out on the weekends.  Any suggestions?  Also if there was any way I could work over there to help with finances?  ( we are both american's obviously)

That is a very good salary. You will be fine.  As for the visa ... I'm not sure about fiances of work permit holders ... have a look at the visa board. Good luck! 

That is a good salary. As an American, will he be taxed thru the USA or will he pay UK taxes? I ask because 40 grand is where the 40% tax rate comes into effect here. And it can be quite brutal!
