Where to Start for my situation
« on: September 06, 2005, 07:32:17 PM »
First I want to thank everyone who has posted in this forum.  The information has been extremely helpful and useful.  Having said that, I'm not sure where to start.  I don't have a college degree (although I will be finishing up my degree through the university of Maryland on-line by 2007) and I don't think my employment history would make someone who would be in high demand. (IE, information technology, heart surgeon, leader of the free world, etc.)  If my idea of moving is a fantasy that I should let pass, someone please tell me.    Thanks in advance.

Why not try a BUNAC visa - which would allow you to work in the UK for 6 month - to see how you like it?

Another option is to train in a shortage profession - secondary level maths/science teacher, nurse, radiograher, ultrasonographer, Xray tech, etc.  That can lead to the work permit sponsorship many Americans need to work legally in the UK.

Or what about studying in the UK?

Wow!  Thanks for the quick reply you guys.  Is there someplace I can get information on professions that have a shortage?   And I never really thought about studying in the UK but it seems like it could be a cool idea.   Where could I get some info?  (sorry to ask so many questions)

You could try asking at your uni if they do any kind of exchange or study abroad thing; and have a look at the visa board for info about student visas.

I did a study abroad for my junior year, and the great thing about it was that I paid the same, in-state tuition and fees as I would have back home as it was an exchange programme.

Your university could have this as an option.  A Study Abroad office or your college's office - Liberal Arts, Science & Eng, etc. - could let you know.
