Liver and fragile bones
« on: September 07, 2005, 06:18:24 PM »
I'm just listening to the 6pm news on Radio 4, and they're talking about a new study which links excess consumption Vitamin A with fragile bones in later life. They're (I missed the beginning, so I don't actually know who "they" are) recommending people limit their consumption of liver, pate, etc. to once a week. But the other part of it is that they're recommending people not take cod liver oil or any other liver-based (high in Vitamin A) supplements. I know lots of people who take cod liver oil tablets every day!

Has anyone heard about this study?

Havent heard of this particular study but it's been widely purported for years about excessive doses of vit a, it's one reason why I wouldn't touch cod liver oil (and worse, give it to my animals which a lot of people do).

High levels of Vit A are behind a lot of problems (from acne and intra cranial hypertension to these kinds of problems you mention).

I also never saw the point of taking cod liver oil when the liver is the detox powerhouse of the body, along with kidneys, so cod will filter toxins through their livers just like us.

It would be great if we could find the study Helen.

I tried to google, but couldn't find it. I'll see if they mention it again on the news -- as I'm still sitting here doing nothing but playing online and listening to the radio.  :-\\\\

Barf!  Liver and pate!  Fortunately, I've never had a problem over-consuming those.

The warning is primarily directed at people over 65.

Here's the Times article:

Thanks S.P

I think it would be just as well directed towards much younger people too, personally and women in particular, very interesting reading.

The news story made it sound as though they were warning everyone. Thanks for that link!
