Pittsburgh to London
« on: October 09, 2003, 05:21:14 PM »
Hello.
Just wanted to introduce myself.  I moved to the South Kensington area last week from Pittsburgh.  Not sure how long will be in the UK.  My 10 month old daughter and I moved with my husband (with his job).  So far I am enjoying myself!  Any suggestions on what an American mother and her baby daughter can do in London?  Play groups, etc...?  Thank you! E

Welcome aboard LittleMartha!  I imagine things must have been and continue to be pretty hectic for you!  If you check out expat events you will see that there are get togethers in the London area.

I hope your stay in the UK is a great one!

:)Welcome to the group! My family and I are moving there in April and I have found this site to be a great place for information on my move as well as making new friends. I look forward to getting to know you and learning from your experiences.

Welcome to the site, littleMartha!  Nice to have you here.  :)

I had some very dear friends who lived in Swickley just outside of Pittsburgh...they've moved now but I spent a month up there with them before moving here.  It's a lovely little place.  :)  Hubby and I hope to move to Pennsylvania when we move back to the US in a couple of years. It's always been my favorite state....I loved the history as a little girl and love the hills and countryside now that I'm older.

Anyway!  Welcome to London!  How are you finding it?  There's plenty of us in London to show you around so if you're ever needing a chat over a cuppa, just shout!  (Babies, are *always* welcome around me!!)  :)

Hope to see more of you on the boards here and hope you're settling in ok!

Welcome to the site Martha.  Enjoy your stay in the UK.  What does your husband do?

Welcome!! Wish you were closer- we have a great local park here in North London with mum and baby groups galore!!

I suggest- in the meantime with all the other gazillion things you are doing to settle in- that you check with your local NHS GPs office.  The Health Visitor that works with your GP should have a list of what they call "Drop Ins" mom and baby groups that usually meet weekly or so.  Check with your local YMCA maybe.  Also see if there is a local NCT group- that is the National Childbirth Trust- an organization for mothers- they can put you in the right direction.  There are often music and/or baby gym groups for under 2s that meet up- these are great places to meet other moms and make connections.

If you just want to hang out - the museums are mostly buggy friendly and are warm places to wander around and give baby a lot to entertain them- and you are right in museum territory!  The National History Museum is our favorite- the Science Museum a close second- and all of these have lifts- you just have to ASK a staffer to show you!

hey- if you dont mind the travel- your welcome to trek up here for a coffee!  PM me!!  oh yeah- that reminds me of another place that is always FULL of moms with buggies here in Crouch End- Star bucks!!!  wierd eh?

welcome - see ya around!
