Travelling to the US
« on: September 02, 2005, 10:02:08 PM »
Just noticed on our holiday documents that passengers must possess a passport that is valid for at least 6 months...well mine expires in January, but I am hoping that the 6 month requirement is for holders of UK passports travelling to the US.

I checked all the US immigration and consulate websites that I could think of, but could find nothing stating that US citizens travelling on a US passport to the US needed 6 months validity, but now I am beginning to worry that coming back to the UK might create a problem.  Has anyone travelled on a US passport expiring in less than 6 months?.  Any probs leaving the UK and retiurning or entering the US and leaving?.

the reason uk citizen must have 6 months validity on their passports is if they become sick and have to have a lengthy hospital stay...and their passports don't expire......while they stay.....and it has to be 6 months from the date of your RETURN not the date you go out........standard question I ask every client that I book......

Thanks MeShell, I should sleep that much better tonight.  Now heres hoping that the ticket agent checking me in tomorrow knows the 6 month deal is only for UK passports.

how long do you plan on staying in the US???

Are you planning on renewing it in the US whilst you are in the US? or you waiting until you come back.........?

Well I made it back ok, only person to mention the upcoming expiration was one of the the Manchester airport security people at the actual gate.  The immigration officer just glanced over the passport when I returned to the UK.  I did get alot of hassle from the US immigration officer, but he never said why I raised his suspicions and I wasn't about to ask him.

I plan to renew it through the Embassy in London in a couple weeks time (after I get through the ILR ordeal next week).  I was told that I could renew it in person in a day while I was in the US, but didn't find out until it was too late for me to arrange it.

question- are you going to get your ILR and then your new passport?  it's not a big deal but you do realize that to have the ILR put into your new passport (if you've alrady got it in your old passport) costs money.  The other alternative is to carry both old (with ILR) and new.  Alternatively, you can go get your new passport (I renewed mine in London, but did it through their carrier service) and then get your ILR.  No need to panic, just heads up.
If you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.
