Student nurses ?

Hey there

are there any student nurses on this forum??

I am, started Sept. 2004, on my first placement at the moment......ask me in two weeks time if i like it, because at this point in time I'm wondering what have I gotten myself into!

oh dear what branch are you in? and what type of placement or you doing at the moment? I'll be on my 4th at the moment and I am already not impressed.

I'm doing Adult, but since this is my Common Foundation Year, so we are with all the other branches as well.  I was an LPN in the states, but have to retrain over here.  I must say, that my LPN training was so much better than this and if I hadn't had it, I probably would not make it in this course.  I'm only hoping that the next few years get better!

I agree the training I am not impressed with if you are lucky you'll get a placement where the staff is helpful and if you're not then you're screwed. I am nearly finished in my CFP which I finish in March. I'm starting my adult placement tommorrow and I am cringing because I am not interested in doing adult although I am not new to it I still don't want to do it. I just finished my mental health placement and that was trying and frustrating.

So, what branch are you doing?  You are so right about the placement and staff, my mentor started out just fine, but when we got back from the Christmas break, she turned into Nurse Ratchett!  I finally plucked up the courage to ask her if I'd done some to offend her and she said no, I just didn't seem motivated enough!  Aaah well, its only a few more weeks and then back to Uni for a different type of torture!

I am doing child branch. My first placement was child and I ran around asking questions trying to do all that I could. The staff most of the time shooed me off which was annoying..or worse they would sent me off to do naff odd jobs like getting stuff from the shops or photocopy crap. took a lot of pestering (which I am good at  ) and at the end of it he told me I was tenacious and gave me a good evaluation.

What I am dreading about this placement is the fact that I have to work alongside another student that is famous for ars* licking the lecturers plus I've heard from other student protest over this ward because they tend to use you like a supernumerary (which is not allowed)

With this toothache I don't know how this placement is going to be 

I was reading through old threads and I am hoping you might know the answer to some of my Nursing questions. I have looked on the internet for quite some time now and I am having trouble finding information about Nursing programs.

One of the things I did read was that you could only be admitted to a Nursing program if you have lived in the UK for 3 years and qualify for the program where your tuition is paid for.  Do you know if this is true? Will I really have to wait 3 years? It seems kind of odd, but I have seen this on more than one website

My husband and I are planning to move to the UK early next year and I would like to go back to school to be a nurse, but I would hate to wait 3 years.

The diploma course you have to have been here 3 years because you received a bursary that is not means tested. You don't however need to wait for the Degree. In all honesty I would do the diploma because at the end of the 3 year course you can then work and convert to degree while costing you less than if you do the degree.

Thanks for the reply! I guess I will just wait. I really wanted to get started right away, but I would prefer to take the cheapest route. I'm still paying my student loans for my first degree..... that I'm not using. You just can't do much with a BA in Psychology here in the states. Maybe I can find something related to Psychology in the UK, while I am waiting for the 3 years to pass. 

have you looked into becoming a Social Worker??

I have thought about it.....My husband is a Social Worker and has been offered a position in London. I should look into it more. I have wanted to be a Nurse since I was about 12 and that is what I originally went to college for. After my first year or so I decided I wanted to change to Psychology because it really interested me. I had always planned on going to grad school, but then I met my husband, we got married shortly after I graduated, and I wanted to take a break from school.  Now I am stuck working in the Mortgage industry and I have to say, it is not very fulfilling. I should of just stuck with nursing to begin with.
