Am mentally planning an escape...advice please
« on: October 04, 2005, 11:45:35 AM »
I love the UK and would love to move there in a few years. I live in a very economically depressed portion of the US and just sick of the whole thing. I have travelled to the UK several times and love the lifestyle. However, I am, uhm, shall we say, not a youngster (just young at heart)  :). I have two daughters, in junior high and high school. Once the eldest is finished, I would love to move across the pond. I am a Technical Writer and studying for a paralegal certificate at night.

Any advice from people of a certain age who made the big escape? Do I save every penny for the next few years and just do it? Can I get Secretarial work to start with ? Am I nuts? ..... ???

You'll need a reason to move to the UK.  Are you engaged to a Brit?  Do you want to continue your studies over here?  Would it be possible for you to secure a work permit?

Spend some more time reviewing this site, there is a lot of good information. Things to consider, as Lola mentioned is how you will be able to live and work here. You also need to look at the cost of living as it varies depending on where you want to live. As for saving, yes...you would need to save a lot as the exchange rate is not in your favor (meaning transfer money from the US to the UK).

Also, remember that visiting here is a lot different than actually living here.

Amen to that!

Please also check out www.britainusa.com and www.ukvisas.gov.uk, which provide information on how you can enter the UK and remain here legally.

Depending on your circumstances, you may not be able to work legally when you arrive here.
