one way vs. round trip for spousal visa
« on: October 29, 2005, 05:25:49 PM »
I know there is a similar thread right now about a fiance visa, but I was afraid this might be a bit different. J and I just got married last Saturday and are going to apply for my spousal visa in another week. I want to buy my flight to England for the move which is going to be on Nov. 29th, and the round trip ticket is 700 dollars cheaper than the one way.

I was just going to buy the round trip to make things cheaper, but this travel agent I was talking to told me that it might not be a good idea. She said if I show up in England with a visa saying I'm settling, but a ticket that says I am leaving, it might cause me problems. I figured the customs agents wouldnt care since the spousal visa allows me to come in and out of the country, and that they would think I was just going to fly back on the return for a visit, and buy another ticket back  again later.

So...play it safe with a one-way, or stop being paranoid and save tons of cash with a round trip?

I can't give you a definite answer on this but I don't think the return ticket should even come up in the conversation when you land and speak to an immigration officer. You usually only show itineraries when you are visiting and the IO is looking for proof that you are leaving. When you land with a settlement visa I can't imagine them even asking you about it. When I landed he looked at my visa, asked if my husband was with me, looked at my husband's passport, wrote a few things down and I was through.

I think it's pretty much common knowledge (even to immigration officers!) that a return ticket is cheaper than a single....  I dont think it will look odd or suspicious if you turn up with a settlement visa and a return ticket.

Buy the round-trip ticket! You are right in that the customs agents do not care if you come and/or go as long as you have authorisation to do so, which you will with the spouse visa.

I am here in England on a spouse visa and have always purchased round trip tickets exept for the last time I went.

Wow, thanks for the speedy replies! I am going to book my round trip ticket then  ;D I guess I was basing my concerns on all my visits where they do ask for the itinerary, I forgot its a whole different thing with the visa. Thanks for saving me the cash!!
