My *new* job
« on: October 27, 2005, 06:32:05 PM »
I got that apple store job today! I start this Monday! I went in tonight to tell them I have to go to Denmark and he was like, the first three months are temporary to make sure they like you and you like them (them=the boss and job) then told me you don't get holiday days during this time. This seems so wrong to me. Even during a temp job, they'd give you a few days off.
He wasn't a manager or anything, but I'm a bit concerned since we booked the plane tickets way before I even applied and I will not be out of pocket by over £100. The thing I'm wondering is, don't they have to give you holiday days? I only want 5 days off at the end of November. I won't be taking another holiday until June 2006.

I'm obviously not familiar with employment laws in the UK, but planned trips are something you normally tell potential employers about before they actually hire you. That way they're more likely to give you the time off. I know this isn't much help now though.

Congrats on the job, though!

Thanks. I've always been told to get the job first then tell.

Congrats to you!

I've been told to tell first.  You can take it as unpaid leave.  I did this at my last job.

I don't care if I don't get paid. I just can't not go.

Congrats on the new job! I would just go to the supervisor, explain the situation, and ask if you can have unpaid leave. All they can say is no. But, if they say no, you need to somehow accept it gracefully if you want to keep the job.

Good luck!

OK, so tell them this.  More times then not they will let you go, especially since you have the tickets already.

You should have told them before you were hired. Five days off seems like alot to be asking for during the first month.

Good Luck

If you volunteer to take it unpaid they'll probably be a lot more willing.... I took 8 days off less than a month after I started my new job, but I told them when they offered it to me that I had the trip booked and they were fine with that.... Had I not mentioned it before I formally accepted I don't think they would have been quite so keen even though I technically have 25 days a year....
