UK Baby Talk
« on: October 09, 2003, 04:37:17 PM »
Just thought this would be fun- as it seems there are a few in these forums expecting- or anticipating expecting!

After I got pregnant I learned a whole new baby language- so many of the common terms are different to what I was familiar with back home(Texas)

USA word = UK word

prenatal= antenatal,  (got funny looks when I said prenatal)

pregnant belly= bump - seemed really wierd at first!

crib= cot

onesie= baby grow

spit up= baby sick, or just sick

nipple= teat-- very hard to get used to!!

diaper=nappy (and then nappy cream,nappy bag etc)

diaper rag= muslin square- these are great!

stroller= buggy (stroller is used for only umbrella strollers)

newborn big baby carriage= pram

Anybody already familiar with the UK words?
Can you think of any more?

Poo? .... Poo!!
Yes, Piglet?
Nothing.  I just wanted to be sure of you.

Burp = Wind

Sorry, I still burp my baby.  To me, winding him would require the air coming out of another area.   :o

Yup.   :)  Babies here grizzle.  It's also called grizzling.  The best part is when someone asked if your baby is grizzly. :)  lol

Grizzle?  Now that's a new one for me!

Pacifier is a dummy here, which I really dislike.  Can't I just call it a nugget or a binkie???  :)

(oops...am I allowed to post in here yet?)  ;)

I gave up trying to change the words to make ppl here happy lol I still use diaper, binki, stroller, crib, etc

but the one that gets me the most is when my mother in law gets confused cuz when we go somewhere with Juliona, I say to her lets go bye bye and mum wonders why I am putting her to bed??

I can't bring myself to use dummy either.  It's funny though, hubby is starting to call it a binky too.

Another one that gets me is feed.  Someone will say, "I'll just give baby his feed."  Every time I hear that it sounds like they are preparing to feed a herd of cattle.

lol- wind and grizzle!! ha! I'm sorry madam, but your baby is too windy and grizzly this evening- she must go bye bye!
lol!!
that reminds me- A few weeks after my baby was born, the health visitor came to my house and said I had a "sucky baby"
>:(
But I wasnt mad for long-- all she meant was that my baby likes to suck- literally!!
so we stocked up on "dummies" and now we are fine!
Poo? .... Poo!!

a pre-baby one that catches me out every time:
pap test = smear
(they just take the appointment and when I get there ask what on earth I wanted)

buggy = pram
mom = mum

We've always called Dagmar's pacifier a dummy, just because "pacifier" is such an unweildy word, and for some reason "binky" grates on me.

LOL I know what you mean about "give her/him a feed".  When I'm on the phone with English friend and she says that, I always picture her strewing seed on the floor for the baby. ;D

The big one that gets me is "Formula" is "Baby milk".
