Meat Substitutes
« on: November 22, 2005, 09:20:11 PM »
Hi-

I am interested in what kinds of meat substitutes people eat here in the UK, and where they buy them.  I am in London, and am used to eating Morningstar Farms products such as the "crumble" and chix patties and Boca sausages.  The only crumble/mince product I have seen here is Quorn, and I didn't like the texture as much.  I would love any ideas!

Thanks!
Aline

Mainly Quorn... that's the only 'meat substitute' i've ever seen here.

I've seen Sosamix in Holland & Barrett's.  And if you have a Harvey Nick's in your area, they sell Mori-Nu tofu.

Try some ethnic food shops, many carry meat substitutes.

If you harbour bitterness, happiness will dock elsewhere.

My husband, son, and I are all vegetarian and absolutely love the veggie stuff in the UK! As far as Linda McCartney the 'pies' are awesome - sort of like a pot pie, very good. The Tesco brand of pies are good too. But 'Quorn' really is the best brand. The chk fillets are great - I make them in the microwave with a bit of veggie gravy on them as they cook - very good! They also do chk nuggets, southern style chk patties (fav!), and chk pieces which are great for stir-fry or chk burritos (just add the taco seasoning to 'em!)... I'd definitely advise you to try the Quorn stuff - the burgers are great but small so I fry them up and melt some cheese on them and serve them with dinner, not on a bun. Hubby and son love them. There really are so many choices for vegetarians and Morrisons usually has a great variety. Tesco's is good too. We do like the Morrisons brand sausages as well. Lots of yummy choices in England and at a good price too. Besides the frozen section, look in the refridge section - by the produce, or dairy -- there is beautiful Quorn sandwich slices, especially the turkey w/stuffing one, love it!

I agree with Quorn. We used to use it in Spaghetto bolognase. It's not bad!
