Wives of students
« on: March 27, 2006, 06:29:44 PM »
Any wives of students on here? That will probably be me starting this fall (we're still working on the funding). I'd love to connect with someone as the prospect of moving seems so exciting but totally overwhelming at the same time.

Here's our story: I'm 25 and currently work f/t in advertising. My DH has been accepted into the PhD program at the University of Aberdeen. We have a 1yo son. We live just outside of Philadelphia, PA. Once we move, I'll be a stay at home mom.

Ahh me!!!  Wife of student right here!  PhD husband!  Hoping to be done soon!  Feel free to PM or post any questions although DH is not a student of a university in the UK. But he has had lots of interaction with schools/professors/grad students here.

My husband goes to school full time, working on Bachelor in Business/Finance, and interns part time at a stocktrading company. He will graduate this December. We live in the US, and I work full time. We have a four year old who attends preschool. It is a challenge!

You might appreciate this comic.

It's online at http://www.phdcomics.com/comics/archive.php?comicid=408
There are more to this story and the rest of the strip is great, too.

You have my sympathies!!  I am a wife of a former masters and PhD student in Biochemistry and I was a stay at home mom through the PhD and post-doc.    What programme is your DH in?

Eventually, they do graduate!
Riding the rollercoaster of life without a seat belt!

Me too!  My DH (the one who posted the comic above) cued me onto this thread.  He's doing a PhD in History at St Andrews.  He spends a lot of time (not) writing papers.

I have some sympathies for him, though, as I've gone through it myself: got a PhD in Biology, and now I'm faculty at St Andrews (yes, we are *really* lucky it worked out that way; there were a lot of sleepness nights last year before we came here wondering if we'd find positions anywhere near each other).  But it also means I'm a bit more jaded--can't be that hard, I did it, didn't I? :)

It's interseting for me to see the differences between the sciences and humanities.  What field is your DH in?

And by the way, you'll be just a couple hours north of us.  I've been up to U Aberdeen.  The coast up there is beautiful!
