That was a good article. I am just learning how to work the system to my advantage.  The one point I thought was really useful was:

"Try and Try Again. As above, award flyers often cancel reservations, and these awards are put back into the system for you to scoop up. Get a "not available" verdict? Try again tomorrow, and again in a few days."

I was looking for christmas flights to Boston and they were about $1000, so I was thinking FF miles??  Well the only available seats were first class, which would have wiped out my balance.  Whilst I was thinking about it for a week (and subsequently decided to go for it, thinking first class would be fun ONCE!), they had evidently released more seats.  I was able to book an economy award ticket for half the miles of first class.  I guess my chance at first class passed me by...luckily.

I have been a loyal BA member since 1996 and have racked up a lot of miles on them thru flying, having the credit card, staying at hotels that get me BA miles, etc.

I found it pointless to be a member of many frequent flyers programs as it was hard to keep track of miles.

i've had the same problem - a few miles here and there on different airlines. to echo what the others have said, Virgin does have a pretty good deal with their miles. Even if you don't have enough for a flight or upgrade, you can order wine or car rental.... i also like flying virgin best. i think they've got the best economy flights [not that i'd know anything else!]

their Miles + Money scheme is fantastic.

I use that too - it's a really, really good thing!
