we do basically the same thing for our pie party and soup party. We invite our usual suspects, whom all make a pie or soup. Then we have the few "i wanna come but didnt have time to make soup!", so we let them come because we love them and they bring wine (!) My best girlfriend didnt have time and she brought a can of soup, that she covered with white paper and wrote her name on it "jenny soup". We dumped it into a bowl and let everyone vote on hers too!!!! (it was chicken noodle)
We each taste all the soups, noting our favorites because we eat more! Then we vote, 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. And who ever hosts the party, gets little gifts for the prizes. Its great fun.
Pie party is pretty much the same except we make sure several people make savory pies, which we eat first, then the sweet pies. And we vote for best savory and best sweet.
