need help figuring out heater!
« on: December 26, 2005, 09:55:18 AM »
My housemate went away for the week and did not thoroughly explain how to use the heater. The temp has gone down significantly since her departure.

It has a round dial where you press in (or pull out) mini~pegs to indicate the times you want the heat to run.
But I can't figure out whether to push them in or pull them out when I want the heating ON.
Also where is the indicator for "current time"? ???
Is the top the current time, or the little grey thingie which sticks up on the left side which I can't figure out?

I'm just turning the dial now til it comes on when I want it and am afraid I'm really gonna screw  something up and get her angry!

If you can help...please do!

Is this an electric heater or gas central heating? If the latter you need to find the boiler and thermostat and turn them on (or off) - usually in the kitchen.

There is quite a variety of timers in use, and unfortunately there are no standards so the details depend entirely on the model.  The two most common arrangements these days are:

1.  The timer dial has two concentric circles of holes and you insert small metal pegs at the required on and off times.   These usually use the inner ring for on and the outer ring for off, but not always.

2.  The dial has a ring of little plastic tabs which can be pushed toward the center or the outside of the dial.    To select the period of operation, you push all the tabs between the required times to the "on" position.    The tabs are most often pushed inward for on and outward for off, but this isn't a hard and fast rule.

In both types, the current time is usually indicated by a small molded line or arrow somewhere around the periphery of the dial.    It may be at the top, bottom, or anywhere in between.

If all else fails, you can determine both the current dial position and the on/off orientation of the pegs by a simple trial.   Set the tabs/pegs to what you think will give a single "on" period, then slowly turn the dial as if you were setting the correct time.   You should hear a small click as the contacts open and close, which will tell you the point to use for "current time."    Once that's established, you should then be able to tell easily whether the in or out position of the tabs give on and off.

It's a gas heater...w/the pilot  light

I thought too that the tabs pushed in would be "on"...
As for the time indicator, the ONLY mark on the dial is that little grey "stick" (for lack of a better term) which is in the interior of the dial at what could be called 10 o'clock position

I will go try it again, it's really driving me nuts!

Thanks for your suggestions

It sounds as though that's probably the marker for the current time.    I don't suppose you could get a picture, could you?

well...I could get a picture if it ends up being an absolute necessity...

Just came back up from trying the turn the dial test.
I tend her heater is defective ::)  At first the heat did not come  on at all when I turned the dial...
Then I remembered she'd said something about "giggling the dial" btwn setting for hot water and house heating,  so I did, and the pilot came on.  So I have it set to run til roughly noon.
If it shuts off at noon and comes back on 4pm then I have figured it out

If it doesn't I shall return...with a PHOTO! lol

thanks Paul

just to let you know Paul, I had it backwards the whole time.
I finally  couldn't stand how frustrated I was and rang down to where my housemate is staying to ask what the heck I was doing wrong.

The tabs have to be pulled out to be "on" on this model, and apparently  it also shuts off when the house reaches the temp the thermostat is set at altho I don't see  any temp gauges anywhere in the house that lets it know when that occurs ???

ah well, at least I got heat as we go into the coldest week thus far

Glad you got it sorted!     If there's a remote thermostat, it could be located almost anywhere in the house.

Yep, I turned up all my heating last night.    It's been snowing lightly here in Norfolk!

we've had snow here in Leicester as well...anywhere from a thin coating to a few centimeters ;)
It made the scenery absolutely gorgeous for my trip today to Ashby de la Zouch and a few other historic buildings in the county!

I'll get a link to pics soon.
