Travel in a foreign land: Surrey!!
« on: January 04, 2006, 07:41:08 PM »
Im flying from Edinburgh to Gatwick on the 14th to see an old schoolfriend from the US who is now living in Cobham in Surrey.
Just trying to work out the best way of getting to her house from the airport...  it looks such a short distance from Gatwick to Cobham (as the crow flies), but the train journey times seem ridiculous...

For example... a train that leaves Gatwick at 10.56 doesnt get to Cobham till 12.11, because it goes to Clapham Junction and i'd have to change there and the next train out for Cobham isnt until 11.42.   That's £10 for a single.
Same problem on the way back, but at the time i want to leave, its even longer cos it has go to Guildford, and the wait at Guildford is nearly 40 minutes!  (This is all according to National Rail Enquiries...)  :-\\\\

Is there anything faster?   I've searched for buses/coaches and came up with nothing useful.
Any idea how many minutes the journey from Gatwick to Cobham would be in a taxi?   Any guesses on the approximate fare?

Thanks in advance for any info...

Probably at least an hour.  Couldn't she pick you up at the airport?  If not, the Gatwick express goes through Guildford and then it's a fairly quick train journey to Cobham.

She couldnt pick me up... she has only been in the UK for 1 month, and doesnt drive.

Gatwick Express... is that a train?  (this sounds like a good idea...  :) )

Yes, sorry I think everybody lives in Surrey.  I'd get the train to Guildford and then go on to Cobham.  Cobham is a little village of the A3 but off the beaten track.

The Gatwick Express website seems to suggest that it is an express (non-stop) service to Victoria.... does it really stop in Guildford?

I must be losing my mind.  I would swear to you that I've taken a train from Guildford to Gatwick that was called the Gatwick Express.  Anyway, there are trains to Guildford from Gatwick that I would think would be at least an hour journey.  Sorry about that.

Cheers!
