At Gatwick, I went through the Non EU line with my two boys, my DH came with me.  All went very smoothly.

yes u can blulilly. When I went into the line and went to hand my passport to the IO, she looked at my fiance visa and asked if my fiance was with me, I told her he was downstairs waiting for me. They'll just stamp your passport like you were in the other line, the stamp they use on the fiance visa with is the same entry stamp they stamp UK citizens with

There's no settlement visa line at Heathrow terminal 4 I've ever seen (and a vast majority of US flights come into terminal 4), it's either EU or other.  I was able to blagg my way through the EU line with my wife prior to me getting UK citizenship, I just asked if it was ok.  I'm sure the officer was a bit annoyed, but I wouldn't count on it every time.
We tried the same thing in Denver for my wife and they said she had to go into the non-US/Canada line!  US immigration sux :)
