Leaving the house
« on: January 09, 2006, 06:58:39 PM »
Is there some sort of unwritten rule about not leaving the house for a month after you've had a baby? My friend told me her dad was going off on one because she left the house for 30 minutes. She had twins a week ago. I just find it a bit weird. I'd hate to be stuck in the house all day everyday for a month....

w/a newborn and a toddler at home, it's a wonder we've been anywhere in the last month - as it is, we've been out to such exciting locales as the surgery, the park and to Sainsbury's.

i don't think there's any 'rule' about leaving the house first month after you have a baby, but personally i'm trying to limit the exposure of my newborn during cold/flu season until she gets a bit older - and can have Calpol, Nurofen, etc.  there's also packing up the kids to go out.  No more popping out to shops, cinema, etc.  Gotta make sure you've got all the supplies for them, car seats, jackets, buggies and such.

most times we just don't bother and only one of us goes out.

What about just the parents?

Some people say that you should stay in just to limit the exposure your baby will have to germs you may come home with. As expat said, that seems particularly important at this time of the year.
They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.

What about just the parents?

we went out a few times when my parents were here to look after the kids.  but tbh, when you have a newborn, much less two, you feel kind of rubbish for a while afterwards.  if it's a choice between going out or taking a nap, a nap is usually more appealing.

during this pregnancy, for example, my stomach muscles split a lot.  right after she was born, it was really hard to walk very far w/o a lot of pain.

Yeah for the first few weeks you don't feel like going out much.  In the first week I remember a walk round the block for 5 minutes was enough. But having said that I do think everyone, even newborn babies, need a bit of fresh air so after the first few weeks when I was feeling more mobile I made a point of getting out of the house with the baby for about an hour every day unless the weather was REALLY bad or we were REALLY tired.

too right, britwife!  after a month, we're feeling a little cabin fever and making a point of getting fresh air.  well, today's was to go the surgery, but it's supposed to be milder soon and we'll be back to our usual play in the park routine, hopefully.

scots firmly belief in 'fresh air'.

I wasnt told I couldnt/shouldnt leave the house but since I had c/sections I was forbidden to drive for seven weeks so I may as well have been chained to the house!

I took my babies out with me in the weeks after they were born and had no problems.  I know what you mean though.  Two weeks after my daughter was born my parents came over for a visit.  I went to the train station to pick them up along with DH and brought the baby with me.  MIL went ape-sh**.
