unique taxpayer reference & self assessment

My FIL insists that I have to do a self assessment this year, although I haven't managed to get the reasons from him.  Anyway, I tried to do it online and I need to have a UTR.  I've looked through all my papers and there's nothing with a UTR on it.  I've tried calling the number given and it's always busy, and you can't do rang back on it, surprise, surprise. 

I'm am not self-employed.  Does anyone know anything about this?

Last year I rang up my local Inland Revenue office to ask if I needed to do an SA. I explained my situation and they told me no, I didn't need to do it. Then they wrote me a letter later saying they'd made a mistake and I did need to do one. After I did it, they wrote me another letter thanking me and saying that in the future I did not need to do one.

Oy.

But as long as you get your answer straight from them, you should be in the clear.

I was under the  impression that if you're PAYE no self-assessment is needed.

Ok, thanks for that Belindaloo, I will give them a call. I haven't done it previously because I don't have a complicated tax situation...basically I just earn "income" from working over here.

Exactly Twisted...that is what I thought too!

The only issue that might arise, as it did for me last year, is if you're  paying tax on the wrong tax bracket.  I ended up getting a sizable rebate last year so if you *want* to do a self-assessment you can. But, if your circumstances haven't changed in the last tax year the whole SA thing would probably be a faff.

If I thought otherwise and could get a nice rebate, I would do it!

i'm on PAYE tax.  however, as i have transferred $ to £ to buy a house here, which involved capital gains, i need to do self assessment as well. 

My local Inland Revenue seems to be out to lunch, constantly.  I've tried calling with no luck at all. I just might have to go over there tomorrow.

I think my FIL is concerned that my tax bracket might have changed.  I was on maternity leave during the previous tax year and therefore didn't earn my normal salary.
