Shipping Costs
« on: January 13, 2006, 03:51:24 PM »
I am trying to move my stuff from Houston to Reading.  I have no furnature to move, just a few boxes with essential items such as clothes and books.  I tried to check the cost of shipping online and I'm getting quotes of over $2500!!

That doesn't sound right to me.  Am I doing something wrong or is that actually the cost of shipping these items?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

USPS by sea is the cheapest way to ship boxes.  I sent 10 boxes for about $650 in August '04.
Love your life, poor as it is. You may perhaps have some pleasant, thrilling, glorious hours, even in a poorhouse. The setting sun is reflected from the windows of the almshouse as brightly as from the rich man’s abode; the snow melts before its doors as early in the spring. Cultivate property like a garden herb, like sage. Do not trouble yourself much to get new things, whether clothes or friends. Turn the old; return to them. Things do not change; we change. Sell your clothes and keep your thoughts…

how do you want them shipped?  Ocean container takes 2 months.  Thats the route im going.  The company Im using has had good reviews here from previous customers.  www.UPakWeShip.com

Im paying $800 for 100 cubic feet (4' x 4' x 6' pallet of boxes)  Im still packiing them all up and have different sizes, but should be about 20-25 boxes AND my king size mattress (6' x 7') an extra $400,  yes I know its big and may not fit in some rooms in the UK but Ill deal with that when it comes up!  Mattress are so expensive there.

Im also taking some extra baggage on plane.  Hope this helps!  :)

oh and this is by space not by weight!  some of my boxes are HEAVY!

The problem with that is that with most shipping companies, there is a minimum.  I only have about 5 or 6 boxes to ship.

Unfortunately, 2 months is a long time to wait for clothing.

I just did a quote for USPS and i found out that for a 25lb package it will only cost about $60.  I can handle that as it'll be about a total of less than $400

88lbs is the max weight on USPS boxes sent by sea.  I think the most expensive box I shipped was about $80.

I am going to try to take as much on the plane as I can. USPS seems to be roughly $2/pound, whereas the excess baggage fees seem to run closer to $1/pound. I still don't know how many boxes I will have though, so some may have to go USPS.
