Register with US Embassy as "Long-Term Traveler"...???
« on: January 31, 2006, 06:16:07 PM »
has anyone who is currently living in UK and is a US citizen registered with the US Embassy as a long-term traveler? (https://travelregistration.state.gov/ibrs/).  I'm wondering if this is a good/bad idea....bad in the sense that it's just another way for the government to track you...but good in the sense that American citizens might have access to things that UK citizens can't have...???

anyone have experience with this or registered?

What you will get is email updates from the embassy about security etc.

The government doesn't 'track' you from it. If something where to happen the Embassy would be able to help you quicker then if you were not registered.

I never registered at the Embassy when I lived in the UK, and I worked there! I think it is more useful/helpful if you live in a country where you don't speak the language or that is not too developed.

I haven't registered here, haven't really thought about it actually.

When I lived in Kenya though we were always getting security warnings from the embassy... there were bombings on the coast and then the start of war in Iraq and presidential and constitutional elections. Point is, if they know how many Americans they can account for i.e., if something went very wrong and they knew where they could find the person or whether that person would be likely to seek embassy help they know who to look for and report that to DC)
