Arriving in England
« on: February 04, 2006, 02:34:12 PM »
When I arrive in England, will I have to still go through the visitors line or do I go through the residents line?  I figured if I have a visa, I won't have to go through that long line stuff.... anyone know?

Unless you have a Brit passport you will have to go through the visitors line.

Until you become a British citizen (British passport, etc), you're still looking at going through the non-EU nationals line (vs the EU nationals line).  The fiance visa, spousal visa (LLR or ILR), etc -- you're still an American national with an American passport, not a national of a European Union country.

TBH I always have observed that the British line (EU line) is longer than the non-, but I fly in through Manchester.  Maybe the lines shape up differently at other airports.

If I'm with DH, I go through the British passport holders line with him (did this on FLR and do it now on ILR).  When we enter the US, he goes through the US passport holders line with me.  We've never had a problem either way.

If either of us travelled alone, we'd go through the line appropriate for our passports.

I've heard of some folks on here doing that before.  I've also heard of some folks getting hassled doing it, so I reckon it just depends on the immigration officer folk you encounter. :)

Last time we went to the US, I tried to see if DH & I could go through the same line together (either/or) and they wouldn't let us.

When I flew back into Heathrow last Saturday, I didn't have to go through the actual non-EU national's line (Thank God, because it was very long).  They sent me through a line that was just for people with UK visa's, so I went through very quickly.

Yes, this is the line you will go through if you have a visa in your passport.

Not all airports have a visa line. In some it's just EU passport vs. non-EU passport (as in Manchester).

At what airport will the OP be arriving?

Thanks, sweetpeach!  I *knew* I had never seen a 'visa line' before...but I've only flown into the country in Manchester and Leeds-Bradford.  It would be cool if they had that though, although I've never had any trouble getting through the non-EU line quickly & usually before DH gets through the EU line -- particularly through Leeds-Bradford, a lot of times it's like me and maybe one or two other people! :)  It's in the US where I end up waiting after going through the citizen's line whilst they photograph, fingerprint, prod & probe (kidding!) DH in the 'foreigners' line. :P

Very true.  When I flew into Gatwick last Spring there wasn't a UK visa line.
