baby movement
« on: February 06, 2006, 08:04:42 PM »
So far we seem to have a pretty quiet little guy. My midwife has always said that I should be expecting at least 10 individual movements in a day and I definitely have that. But last night I read in the UK edition of 'What to Expect When You're Expecting' that you should be having a lot more than that. That book says you should take time in the morning and evening to count movements and expect 10 within those periods alone.

So I realise that all babies are different, but I'm pretty amazed by this huge difference in what to look out for. I guess I should count my blessings that I'm not repeatedly kicked in the ribs or being woken up, but still...

So just wondering, what was/is your experience? How busy have your babies been?
When I was 5 years old, my mother always told me that happiness was the key to life. When I went to school, they asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up. I wrote down ‘happy’. They told me I didn’t understand the assignment, and I told them they didn’t understand life. ~ John Lennon

then I should have been worried if I read that whilst pregnant because Jess wasn't much of a mover it wasn't till late evenings when she squirmed and even that wasn't much. She did get the hiccups but not a lot.
But never fear, gentlemen; castration was really not the point of feminism, and we women are too busy eviscerating one another to take you on.

Roisin moved more than Aillidh did.  But both moved mostly late at night - as I was trying to sleep, usually.  Both girls would wake me up kicking around at night, and Aillidh had this thing about using my bladder as a trampoline.

Both got loads of hiccups in the womb and outside as well.

I never read any pregnancy books.  Didn't miss anything, from what I gather.  Never counted movements, either.  Midwife said there was no need unless you were concerned.

From what I have read, babies are all different.  If you have an anterior placenta that can cause you to feel less movement as well.  I like to give Jr a little boost once in awhile with some oj.  I feel him though more in the evening, buts sometimes all through the day.

I always found that when I was active, I didn't notice my sons movements that much. However, when I would take a bath, he was always very active, especially later in the pregnancy. Also, and this is kinda weird, whenever I ate an orange, he would jump, and kick. I remember one kinda scary time, I was out walking to the store just down the street, and I tripped and fell, landed on my stomach, twisted my ankle, scraped my hands and elbows all up, turned back home, crying, to return to my husband......and we were waiting to see if he would move, but he was still. So, my hubby got me an orange, and said 'try this'. It worked, but we did go to the emergency anyway, just to make sure all was ok. It was. And I remember when going to bed, this goofy baby would stay still, until I layed down to go to sleep, I would try to sleep on my side, and he would kick and move, and kick really hard, if I was laying next to my hubby, where my bump could touch his back, he would feel the baby kick him!!!! It was only when I turned on my back, that he would settle. So, for most of my pregnancy, I had to sleep on my back, cuz the stubborn little guy would NOT let me sleep any other way!!

It seemed to me that Ethan kicked a lot but I never actually counted.  Babies in utero do kick more when you're at rest. When you're moving about they are lulled to sleep and when you rest they wake up.

Through most of my pregnancy I never felt DS move until I sat down in the evenings.  Towards the end, he kicked whenever he pleased.  And it didn't help that he had his butt wedged under my ribs.

For a little revenge, I'd spoon DH and let the little guy kick him in the back for a while, but mostly I had to stay a rolled up with my body pillow so my sore hips wouldn't keep me awake.

If your midwife is fine with his movement, that's all that matters.  Besides, What To Expect... is notorious for its scare tactics.  I stopped reading it when I realized that simply living my life was, apparently, harmful to my baby. ::)

My son was active.  Very active.  It was really annoying, actually, because it always made me feel a bit agitated always having this thing wiggling around.  The only time he was ever calm was when I was in the shower.  I took a LOT of showers. ;)

Definitely go by your the midwife says, not the book. :) The only time I ever worried about Philip's movements was in the last week of my pregnancy. I went a whole day without feeling him and had to go into the hospital to be monitored... it was reassuring seeing his movements on the screen even though I couldn't feel them. My midwife basically said that all babies are different... you only need to be worried if the baby starts doing something different than that baby normally does.
I'm done moving. Unrepatriated back to the UK, here for good!

how far along are you? i know that you are supposed to feel the baby moving around in the 2nd trimester and i've gotten what i think might be movement, but might also mean i need a trip to the loo ;) sorta confusing, actually, but i'm about 23 weeks so maybe that's too soon to get full on somersaults and kicks?!

I'm 30 weeks.

Thanks folks. I'm not all that stressed about it since I AM feeling movement. I was just surprised by the huge difference in the literature. I'm not a slave to the books by any means - and certainly not to What to Expect - but it's crazy how there's so much conflicting info.

There really is and it's hard not to take it all to heart.  Normal for one is not for the other, but it's hard to really believe it sometimes!
