Dependent Work Visa
« on: February 06, 2006, 01:51:42 PM »
Does anyone know how these work? I received my dependent work Visa in the mail and I noticed that it is in my maiden name. My passport is in my maiden name, but it was amended about a year ago to my married name. I have been married for 3 years and I legally changed my name right after I got married. I just didn't get around to changing my passport until last year. Will this cause a problem? I think its a mistake, but DH says that my maiden name is my birth name and thats probably why they did it. Will I have to use my maiden name when I apply for a job? I emailed the department that processes the work permits over 2 weeks ago and they have not responded. My parents are worried that I might get turned away at immigration since my plane ticket is in my maiden name. That would suck! Does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks for your help!

as far as I know, unless you legally changed your name  - in which case you would have a new birth certificate issued with your new name - your maiden is still your legal name.  You only assume your husband's name.

No.  In the UK you can begin to legally use your married name as soon as you marry without having to change it by deed poll or any other means.

If both names are in your passport, you will have no problems at immigration at all.  You may want to have your marriage certificate handy just in case there are questions.

You can have your pass port in any name you have or do legally use as long as your plane ticket is the same as on your passport you will be ok.

I agree.  I never leave the country without it!  It has come in useful once or twice!

You don't change your name on your birth certificate in the US when you get married either. Your name on your birth certificate is the name you were born with.

My understanding is that when a passport is amended to a new name the old name is no longer legally valid, so I would be concerned if your passport has been amended to your married name but your ticket and visa are in your old name. You may be able to get away with it though since I think many people forget to check the back of passports for amendments. That's curious that they issued you a visa in your maiden name. Which name was on your visa application?

You may have a problem at immigration (airport) and it states that the ticket name and pass port name have to be the same I would look into it call the passport office they can tell you any changes you need to make and if there will be a problem using your pass port.

Many women change their name when they marry, and immigration are well used to people using their maiden names, married names, or even switching between the two.  As long as you carry your marriage certificate with you, there should really be no problem at all at immigration.

I thought it was strange too. My application was in  my married name. I was thinking maybe they just weren't paying attention and just looked at the page with the picture which has my maiden name instead of flipping back to the amended page when they were typing up the work permit?. It was really odd to see my maiden name on the visa because I have been using my married name for 3 years now. Thanks for all of the replies!

Oops. I meant to say in the original post that my ticket is in my married name and my visa is in my maiden name and thats what worries me. I have just heard so many horror stories about people being turned away if they didn't have their ducks in a row......I was just worried that it might cause a problem.

I have this exact situation. My passport is in madien, work permit in madien, passport is amended on last page for the married name. I use married name and it is my legal name for SS#, DL - UK and US, all credit cards, bank statements etc. I book all my plane tickets in my married name. It's never been a problem for me just point them to the back of the passport where the amendment is. I also never carry my marriage license with me - not a bad idea I guess but haven't needed it so far.
