Work permit question from the South Dakota gal....going to Glasgow.

I've been researching business visa's, work permits, etc. and see that if a potential employer applies for a work permit for me before I arrive and it is approved, I have to leave the country immediately once that job contract is up.  Does anyone know how soon I can return?  Thanks!

As soon as you get another sponsor but if your employer applies to renew your work permit, you won't have to leave at all.  Most work permits are for 5 years and at the end of that time, you're eligible for permanent residency, rendering a work permit unnecessary.

Thanks for your help in this matter.  I don't plan to settle without a visa, but right now it is up in the air as to what kind of visa to apply for.  My sweetheart of 7 years lives in Glasgow and we decided to end the short jaunts to be together and start making plans to live together always.  He was born in Los Angeles but has lived in the UK for 25 years.  He is divorced, has his kids and work there....etc.  He married a Scot.  I on the other hand am still studying for nursing school, my present job ends March 28th, and my children are grown and on their own.  So what I want to do is legally find employment at maybe NHS, and continue my studies.  I just need to take the first step which I believe is trying to get interviews and then applying for a business visa so I can legally attend those interviews?  Am I right? ???  But this all takes time so I might have to just go over for a visit so we can see one another, (it has been two years since we could last be together).  Do I need a visa just for a holiday visit?  Am I making any sense?  What one does for love...eh?

Your best bet then would be to apply to a university and get a student visa.  Then you can work 20 hrs a week, go to school, and getting a job with the NHS or in health care would be much easier as you'll be already in the UK and have a UK education/experience. 

You don't need a visa for a holiday visit but I wasn't clear what your plans were.  Good luck..

Ah ha!  Things are beginning to get clearer now.  Do you know if I have to actively be attending school when I apply for my student visa.  I am not attending classes this semester.

No, you don't need to be actively studying when you apply.  But you do have to have been accepted at an accredited UK school for full-time study.
