Pregnant and Miserable...
« on: February 12, 2006, 07:10:12 PM »
So, my step-son gave my hubby the flu, and hubby gave me the flu.  I'm miserable as I can't take anything and I HATE having a stuffed up nose!  Also have a mild fever, chills, aches, sore throat, the works!

So my question is, what have former or current pregnant ladies done to make themselves feel better while being ill?  Natural remedies, vitamins, all that stuff.  Can I even take vitamin C?  I called NHS Direct this morning and he basically said nothing but paracetamol, sparingly.  I'm going to call my midwife tomorrow but is there anything I can do?  Thanks, ladies.

Hugs! It is very miserable being ill when you're pregnant.  Hot lemon and honey drinks might help.

And also, does having flu harm baby?  Did anyone else have flu when they were pregnant?

I doubt it would harm your baby.  I had a  bad cold when I was pregnant, don't know if you'd call it flu, but anyway it did him no harm.

I had flu so bad when I was pregnant I had to go to the hospital to have the vomiting stopped with a shot, and have an IV to get rehydrated while they monitored DD. And a few weeks later I had a beautiful baby girl  :). Watch your temperature and hydration - that's where you can get into trouble. I think my doc had me call if my temp was over 100 or 101F (this was the US) to talk to the doctor on call and have them decide what they thought. And you need to stay hydrated since dehydration can cause premature labor. You can take lukewarm baths as well to try to control mild fever as well as the cool cloths on the forehead etc.

For the stuffy nose, a saline rinse can work wonders to clear you out and promoting healing. Just put some salt in warm/mild water and use a bulb syringe or something like that to gently irrigate your sinuses. You'll feel it in your throat as it's working. Gargling with salt water is really good as well to help your throat recover from the ravages of drainage.

I hope you are able to get some rest and feel better soon!
Stop waiting. Start doing.

I had to be hospitalised at 13 weeks w/a stomach virus.  TexasEx (hey, me, too!  Class of '95!  :D) is right, keep an eye on hydration.  That's what did me in!

Are you allowed to take Zinc while pregnant? Is there a UK version of Zicam nasal swabs? It's homeopathic (active ingredient: Zincum Gluconicum) and does wonders for stuffiness.

Hope you feel better soon!

I don't think you are allowed to take any homeopathic anything when pg.  I have the best stuff too and could not use it.  You can take paracetamol if you are over 12 weeks, but not extra strength.  I take Vit C everyday and drink a lot of OJ.  Make sure to drink a lot of water, even more then you normally would now.  Number 1 though, REST!

Feel better!  I only had a bad cold, but the misery I felt was so awful, I can't imagine how bad it must be to have the flu!

I can't be of much help, but do agree that rest and getting that fever down are very important.  I had a mild fever last week due to a UTI and took paracetamol to get the fever down.

I hope you feel better soon!!!
