Puppy mouthing
« on: August 30, 2006, 02:23:14 PM »
Our Samson is about 14 weeks old and is still nipping the boys like crazy. I realize he probably considers the boys like his siblings and he is just playing but a puppy nip to a two year old can hurt a bit. Samson doesnt do it with Frank or me only with the kids. I read that movements should be slow so puppy realizes you arent playing but how can I tell a 2 year old to pet the puppy slowly? Im frustrated as its getting a bit out of hand.

Here is the method that we used with Weston, I read that it is supposed to imitate what the mother dog and littermates would do...When he put his open mouth on us (not even nipping necessarily) we would yelp loudly (like the puppy would if you accidently stepped on him), and then immediately get up and walk into another room, or into the corner of the room that you are in.  Turn your back on him and completely ignore him for a couple of minutes.  Then you can go back to playing.  If he does this more than twice, we just quit playing completely.

It doesn't matter how fast the kids move, or how big they are.  You/they need to establish that they are higher in the pecking order than he is.

yes i read this also but the trick is getting the kids to do it. I have four sons ages 2, 4, 8 and 11. Samson thinks they are playmates.

Have you ever watched Ceasar Milan? It's very interesting...maybe you could get some tips from his site?

I don't have any tips...but maybe you could send him an email!  :P
