Spousal Visa....Are we ready?
« on: February 28, 2006, 09:40:31 PM »
I need some opinions on the information I've gathered!

My application for a spousal visa is already filled out and the fee paid.  I have an appointment at the consulate in NY a week from today.  My husband is here (he's been living here on a K-1 fiance visa as we had intended to settle and then changed our minds) so he'll be coming with me to the interview.  Since he's been here since August and not living or working in the UK, we'll be living with his mum while we get our feet on the ground.

To support our petition we have:
Original marriage certificate
Letter from his mum stating we can stay there.
Letter from his mum stating her intention to support us.
Letter from his mum's bank certifying she has a mortgage.
His mum's bank statements for the last three months.
A letter from his mum's job stating her salary (she doesn't get payslips)

What else should I be looking to add to this?

Okay, you are missing CVs (resumes) for the both of you, including any letters of recommendation from past bosses or coworkers.  You need to show that you two will be able to find work and suppor yourselves.  If you haven't had a job before, but have education, bring any degree certificates
Passport size photographs of yourself (2)

Here's the website, for further info:  http://www.britainusa.com/visas/other_show.asp?SarticleType=25&Other_ID=322

Good luck!

Thanks!  I picked up my degree from the University today so I could make a copy to have it evaluated by the degree-translatey-people (yes, that is the technical term) so I'll include a copy of that and my CV.

I'm so nervous; it would really screw things up if we were to get denied!

Don't worry. It's quite an easy process. My husband {then fiancee} and I also were on an American Spousal Visa and changed our minds. We had our appointment at the NY Consulate for my British Spousal Visa ... the day we flew to London!!!

We also had a letter from my husbands parents stating that we were staying with them and they were supporting us {altho we did NOT stay in Cheltenham where they live, but moved automatically to London to stay with my husbands brother for 1 month before we found our flat & jobs.} Anyway, they also provided a mortgage statement and bank account info.

We bought our resumes, our bank statements {also savings, stocks, mutual, etc... anything proving we had lots saved!}, marriage certificate, passport, passport photos... Hmm! What else?! A print-out of our appointment confirmation... I remember we did bring some wedding photos & cards {we got married 5 days prior} but the case worker didn't need them & actually giggled when she saw them, "How sweet!"

I will point out that we were 1st online outside the consulate. Once it was time to be let inside, there was a small line behind us. They would not let my husband in even tho we were there for a spousal visa. I was first in line inside for my visa to be processed. The case worker asked where the letter of support was from my husband. I told her I didn't have one, he was waiting outside and the guards would not let him in! She wrote on a piece of scrap paper "Please let Andy XXX in." Are you kidding?! Is this what "security" is coming to? I could have written it myself. Anyway, I had to go outside, get him and then get back in the line- waiting another 30 minutes. But I still got my visa less then 2 hours later and the case worker was really friendly.

Don't worry! Just have your paperwork in line, your appointment set up and you'll be ready to go! Good luck!  :-*
