Since I've met my husband my mother in law has gone through 2 washer/dryers. They all ended up breaking down...right after the warrenty ended! So she just ended up just buying a washer and using an indoor airer.

I'm the exception to the rule.  :)

I have had the same washer-dryer for 5 years with no problems (touch wood) and i do at least 1 load every day.  This washer-dryer was in the house when we bought it, and the owner said he'd had it for over 3 years.  So this thing is at least 8 years old, still good as new... washes, dries, and makes my life a lot easier, and my house a lot less cluttered!   :)

But... all the flats ive rented in the past have had either NO washer at all, or *just* a washer with no drying option.

my furnished flat came with a seperate washer & dryer.  but i think that's very unusual.  most brits don't expect a dryer when renting a flat.

Are there laundromats in the UK? These don't exist here in Sweden but I thought that maybe they did in the UK.
I'm an American (with dual citizenship) living in Stockholm, Sweden for almost 6 years.

My Swede and I are looking towards a future move to the UK.

We didnt have a washer OR dryer in our new place!  We just bought a washer and are air drying.  Not sure if I want to spend more american dollars on a dryer....the only thing I miss being dryed is towels!  Everything else Im ok with airdrying, especially my expensive jeans, they last alot longer when you dont dry them.. down side, they take forever to dry!!! ::)

Yes, although perhaps not quite so many as in the past.   You'll sometimes have to search around to find them.  The one in my nearest small town, for example, is fairly well hidden in the back section of a small shopping arcade, out of sight of the main thoroughfares.

If you're asking someone, or looking it up in a phone book or whatever, you'll need to call it a 'laundrette'.  :)

Does any one remember the movie "my Beautiful Laundrette" with Daniel Day lewis, about 1987 or so?

My mother came to visit and couldn't stand hanging her clothes out to dry.  She bought a dryer for us which is great!  It is a condenser dryer which can be plugged in anywhere.  I still air dry quite a few things, but it is nice to have fluffy towels!

I do miss my maytag neptune set though..

and can you believe that his next movie (or previous?) was Room with a view?  He was Cecil.  Couldn't be more diametrically opposed!
